People are rarely going to like a film just because a particular person directed it, or simply because this actor or that one was in it. The whole storyline for this film begins very early, when a man by the name of Jerry sits across the table from two men who are to later kidnap his wife. He plans the whole thing so that her father will throw up some ransom money, that Jerry and the two men will later split for their efforts in the matter. Jerry, is a car dealer who is a little less than honest when it comes to his dealings, which is likely the case for his financial plight.

The problem is, after they part ways, Jerry soon learns that he would not need the money from the ransom they were all to split. You see, a business venture of his just sprouted legs and promised a handsome cash payout. So he desperately tries to contact the kidnappers to call it off, but to no avail. And the next piece of the movie involves the actual kidnapping, which is less than smooth.

While the original ransom was set for 80,000 between the captors and Jerry, Jerry later decides to tell his father in law that they are demanding a million. He agrees adamantly to pay it, but demands that he is there to give it to the kidnappers himself. Wade, the father in law, actually aims to kill the kidnappers and get his daughter without giving them the money at all.

It doesn't go exactly as planned though, and Wade ends up very dead and Carl, one of the kidnappers ends up seriously wounded (having been shot in the jaw). But, Carl escapes with the money and he soon learns it is much more than 80,000. He buries the rest and take the money back to his partner at their isolated cabin. There, Carl learns that Jean, Jerry's wife is now dead at the hands of Carl's partner in crime. They argue, and Carl winds up dead too.

The other is soon arrested, and the following scene depicts Jerry being arrested as well for his involvement in planning and seeing through with the entire plan. There were so many incredible performances in this motion picture, though among the best would be William H. Macy as Jerry and Steve Buschemi as one of the two kidnappers.

If you're looking for an action flick that's a little different from the usual shaky cam and incoherent running and shooting, Exiled may be the answer. It belongs on any movie downloads queue for the way that it manages to create a strange, dreamlike trance in its action through slow motion and unpredictable developments.

We follow a gangster who betrayed his boss years ago, and his since gotten married and had a baby. The boss sends a couple of hitmen to take him out, while at the same time, two other former members of the gang show up to protect him. This is where the movie begins.

These characters are all friends since their youth, and there's a sense of warmth and sentimentality as the five characters come to a compromise and decide to honor friendship before duty. They decide to pull off a big score to help support the hero's wife and child before settling their differences. The result is something much more personal than the usual "It's Just Business" approach to violence in gangster movies.

This movie comes from Johnnie To, the legendary Hong Kong director who came up around the same time as John Woo and Ringo Lam, in the Heroic Bloodshed era. Where those movies were driven by anger at the Chinese takeover of Hong Kong, Exiled was made after the takeover, when it was shown that things hadn't changed quite as much as the Hong Kong people were expecting.

The film really feels like a dream, with slow motion shootouts taking several minutes while only carrying about thirty seconds of action were they to be shot in real time. One incredible sequence has a character throwing an empty drink can into the air, and the shootout takes place over several minutes as the can falls to the floor in slow motion just seconds after the final bullet is fired.

The action is clear and coherent, the story isn't always so clear. This actually helps the film's dreamlike feel, so if you just watch it for the characters and for the action, the weird, twisty-turny story won't infringe upon your enjoyment of the film and what it really does have to offer the viewer.

The Heroic Bloodshed era of Hong Kong action flicks was certainly an incredible time for film lovers. Hard Boiled and City on Fire defined the genre, being angry, explosive films, showing independent characters taking on the masses as a symbol of Hong Kong independence against Chinese communism. Lam and Woo went to Hollywood, and you could argue the qualities of their American films. Johnnie To stayed behind and turned the genre into something entirely different.

Where the classic Heroic Bloodshed films were about anger and revenge, this one is about forgiveness and compassion, and is certainly a unique, one of a kind action film, both exciting and trance like at once.

The Dead or Alive Trilogy belongs on your must see movie downloads list simply because it's so crazy. So think of it like Japan's answer to Heat. Interestingly, the movie was meant to solve one of the main problems with that movie: The ending was kind of an anti-climax.

We won't spoil the ending of Dead or Alive, but let's just say that it's certainly not an anti-climax. The entire movie is a thrill ride, starting with a rock video style montage that gets you into the movie's world fast, and culminating in an ending that you will not believe.

Dead or Alive 2 is both a sequel and not a sequel. The two leads are recast as two entirely different characters, but they sort of parallel the original two characters. In the original, they were a cop and a gangster after one another's throats. This time, they're best friends. They grew up together in an orphanage and now work as hitmen who donate all their proceeds to fighting disease in third world countries.

The first movie in the series has a very negative edge to it, it's very harsh. This one is all heart, it's very positive, so it's interesting to see the whole thing flipped on its head. It also deals a little more responsibly with the cost of violence on a person's soul.

The third film, Dead or Alive Final, goes in the science fiction direction, more specifically, cyberpunk, with replicants and evil dystopian governments. While it might not be the most exciting of the trilogy, it's worth seeing so you can check out how it ties the whole thing together in such a strange way.

If you like the Dead or Alive trilogy, you should also check out Deadly Outlaw Rekka, which feels like the fourth film in the series in spirit. It has the same sense of over the top craziness and stars Riki Takeuchi in the lead role.

The trailer for the first movie in the trilogy proudly declares that Miike is the mad dog of Japanese film, and it's true, that's not just hyperbole. The guy makes something like four or five movies a year, and has created over one hundred total over the course of his career. Not all of them are of the same quality, but for just one in ten movies to be great, that's ten great films, which is more than most directors ever get a chance to put out.
