All About The Wii Controller And Its Options

By Kyle Anderson

Nintendo introduced the Wii in 2005 and its popularity has only grown over the past years. For the uninitiated, this game console and all of the games created for it work via wireless remote controls. It can get confusing if you shop for a Wii controller because there are so many different options to choose from. This article will help clarify what the different controller options are and how they are used in the games.

The basic controller is a rectangular, hand-held remote. It comes with a built-in speaker, has an external connector for a Nunchuk (which we will discuss later in this article), Classic Controller connector and a rumble feature which causes the remote to vibrate at particular points in games or to alert a player that it is his or her turn. Basic controllers come in white, black, blue and pink. They are battery operated; a recharging port is available separately. Each Wii game console supports four Wii remote controllers.

The Wii Nunchuk controller was the first Wii attachment. It plugs into the side of the basic remote and has a long 3-4' cord. It is used like a joystick. It does not require its own power source. To use the Nunchuk, the player holds the Nunchuk in one hand and the remote in the other, when required by the game; not all games use the Nunchuk. The Nunchuk joystick is moved to make characters in the game move more quickly and nimbly, while the basic controller is used to make the characters do other moves. It can be held in either hand. Nunchuks come in black and white.

In June 2009, the Wii Motion Plus controller arrived in stores. The Motion Plus is an expansion device for the basic remote. It fits right onto the bottom of the basic controller. This extends the length of the remote by about an inch and a half. According to well-known Nintendo Magazine, the accuracy of the Motion Plus is completely accurate. It makes complex character moves much easier. You can purchase it in one of four colors: black, white, blue and pink. The games Academy of Champions, James Cameron's Avatar, Grand Slam Tennis, Shaun White Snowboarding and Zelda can be played using Motion Plus.

Used in place of the remote, the Dance Dance Revolution controller is made especially for the game Dance Dance Revolution. It is a mat that lays on the floor. As the dance moves are shown on the TV screen, the player attempts to match the moves as quickly as possible.

For shooting games, Wii created the Perfect Shot controller. It can be held one-handed and is completely accurate. Most people prefer the Perfect Shot over the Wii Zapper controller. While shooting with the Perfect Shot remote, the Nunchuk is used. The player holds one controller in each hand.

The Wii Zapper with Link's Crossbow Training controller is simply a gun shell that holds both the Nunchuk and the main controller at the same time. It must be used with two hands. Nintendo created it to assist people with holding the remote and Nunchuk steady while playing shooting games.

For steering games, Nintendo created the Wii Wheel controller. The primary remote fits onto the Wheel, making racing games much more realistic and fun to play.

The Wii basic remote controller is used in every game. All of the other accessories and Wii controllers connect to the basic remote in some way. Using the correct Wii controller when playing games makes the game much more enjoyable for everyone.
