He refuses to leave the company that he is with until he knows this key bridge is secure and not able to be used by the Germans.

This is an accurate depiction of all of the emotions and feelings that are relative to being at war. You are crying when the men are crying, you are scared when they are, and you celebrate when they do. This is an instant classic that everyone should see if they get a chance to, if nothing else for the incredible performances by Matt Damon (Ryan), Tom Hanks (Miller) and Tom Sizemore (Sgt. With their country weakened from decades of war, embattled from the ineffective rule of the new king and vulnerable to insurgencies from within and threats from afar, Robin and his men heed a call to ever greater adventure.

Some black people were attempting to break into his car, when he was alerted of it and he raced outside, gun drawn. He began firing at them all, killing one and wounding another. One managed to escape. The fate of the wounded would mark one of the most graphic scenes ever depicted on film, which was Derek forcing the man to put his teeth onto the street curb and Derek stomping on the back of his head.

Derek is forced to confront his hating ways in prison, when he realizes that he is the minority and there is no protection for him. He, through a lengthy series of circumstances, befriends a black man that he is on laundry duty with. Derek vows that he would do anything to take it all back and start over again far away from what he now represents. He learns that his younger brother is headed in the same direction, and he will not allow this to happen.

He is released and meets up with his girlfriend at a welcome home party. He asks her to move with her, but she refuses. He is also forced to face the man that taught him to be a white supremacist and tells him that this is no way to live. He and his brother leave, and Danny is able to finish the paper which you hear as the narration for the ending of the film.

The movie ends with Danny being shot in the bathroom at school by a black kid. Edward Norton (Derek) and Edward Furlong (Danny) bring this powerful story to light. "American History X" is a depiction in the difference between being right and believing that you are right. It is a statement of how far some people are willing to go to prove one way or another.

Walter Hill really created a unique little flick with Streets of Fire. The film works on the level of fantasy, mixing fifties and eighties aesthetics into a new kind of setting. The environment the characters inhabit is surreal and dreamlike, and the cinematography is beautiful, with rainy streets and neon signs dominating the screen.

Something that really helps to define the movie is the music. Again, it blends the style of the fifties with the eighties, so you have those great old Doo Wop dance rock songs treated with a layer of synth rock and roll and dramatic female vocals. Ellen Aim's band, The Attackers, features prominently in the film. One of these songs, I Can Dream About You, actually climbed up pretty high on the charts.

The story itself is pretty stock action film stuff, but this time it's done with such incredible style that it feels fresh and all new. The girlfriend is kidnapped, the hero comes home to save her. We've seen this story hundreds of times before, but this time, it's elevated to a sort of modern day, Rock and Roll fairy tale.

Walter Hill has remained one of the great directors of the last few decades, but rarely gets the respect he really deserves as such. He continues to knock it out of the park with more recent films like Undisputed, and earns acclaim with each new film, but is rarely mentioned alongside Scorsese or Brian dePalma, which is truly a shame, as he's certainly one of the most entertaining directors alive.

The film also uses a guitar score by blues legend Ry Cooder to compliment the Rock and Roll. His bluesy, earthy slide guitar sound really contrasts the glitzy pop tunes and lends a certain contrast to Tom Cody, who is frequently accompanied by Cooder's music.

If you want a great double feature, watch Streets of Fire alongside The Warriors. The Warriors is, similarly, a sort of Rock and Roll, street fable, but takes the concept in a rougher, tougher, more gritty direction, while Streets of Fire is a little more glossy, a little more pretty and colorful in comparison to The Warriors and its title street gang heroes.

The movie was original intended to be the first in a trilogy, but, unfortunately, the film didn't perform at the box office quite as well as expected, so the sequels, The Far City and The Return of Tom Cody, never got funding. "get shorty" was more cynical and satirical of the industry while "be cool" was simply an excuse to put a stellar cast together and attempt to make a comedy out of it. Vince Vaughn as an Ebonics-speaking nitwit is a routine that becomes equally as annoying as the rock's flamboyant portrayal of a gay aspiring actor. Cedric the entertainer and Andre 3000 are placed in stereotypical roles that do little to amuse. Christina Milian is given ample opportunity to showcase her musical talents (. Including a blazing performance with Aerosmith on stage in a crowded arena. ) but for a character whose the sole center of all the chaos, she somehow manages to escape being involved with, well, anything. We see a few trailers for movies starring the characters in the film, who are, after all, film actors. Jack Black starring as a series of fat-suited people sitting around a table farting is a perfect spoof on everything Eddie Murphy has been up to lately.

As you probably know, the story revolves around a group of actors who are led to believe that they're going through a rigorous survival training routine for the film and wind up in over their heads when the situation gets a little too real. This really works with the theme of the film being sincerity and fakeness, and the fact that a fake situation becomes real is an incredible premise, everything considered.

So what it really comes down to is the idea of reality. You can be who you want to be in life, but only if you get over your ego and stop trying to live based on the standards others place on you. The film is layered in irony as we see the characters playing characters playing characters, there are a lot of layers of falseness going on.

It's a very funny film, too, of course, but it's also a moving and dramatic film, as well as an exciting one. The movie is really more than you'd expect from Ben Stiller these days, who seems content to just collect big paychecks for big budget movies with low mileage jokes. This one is actually one of his very best, though.

The action in the film is really interesting, offering a new dynamic that we haven't seen in films before. The characters are carrying prop rifles with blank rounds, so there's really a whole new dynamic in that only one side of the gunfight is actually shooting live rounds. Again, this comes back to the theme of "faking it".

Look out for a really, really great cameo about a third of the way in. You won't be able to guess who it is right away, so don't look at the imdb page, either, or you may spoil one of the biggest laughs in the film.

So the movie is funny, moving, dramatic, exciting and really well made. Yes, Ben Stiller has been striking out in recent years, but this movie more than makes up for all of his flops. Definitely give it a watch if you haven't seen it yet.

Star Wars Episode V The Empire Strikes Back Review

The second movie in the original trilogy, Star Wars Episode V The Empire Strikes Back is one of the greatest science fiction movies ever made. For anyone that needs a place to escape for a while, this is the movie to watch.

There are many reasons this is such a great movie. The viewer is treated to seeing the underdogs, the people on the run, the people that are being hunted. Being hunted is a strange thing, and it creates a sort of drama that simply can't be recreated anywhere else.

Of course, it wouldn't be much of a movie if they just hung out on some random planet the whole time, so they are found pretty quickly. The battle that ensures is a spectacular battle. The rebels are so over powered that there whole strategy is simply to try to keep the Empire out of the base long enough to evacuate it. The rebellion is still pretty small at this point, so running away is really the only answer. When the viewer sees how much of a ragtag group the rebels are and how hard they have to fight just to try to stay a step ahead of the Empire, it is easy to see that the rebellion is still just a pipe dream. At this point it seems like there is no way these people can win against such an overwhelming force.

After barely escaping, the main characters decide to split up. Luke goes to find Yoda, who is going to train him in the ways of the force. The training that takes place is some of the best examples of just how in over his head Luke was. He really had no idea what he was supposed to be doing.

While Luke struggles with his destiny, the rest of the characters are on the run from the Empire more directly. They are stuck in an asteroid field, trying to evade a fleet of ships that has nothing better to do than spend however long it takes trying to take out Han and Leia and Chewie.

Eventually everyone makes it to Bespin. In this Cloud City Luke learns, in one of the most epic moments in movie history, that Darth Vader is his father. And even after that, even after all the fighting everyone has had to do in the movie, the only victory that the rebels really get is that most of them get away. Han doesn't make it out with them, after having been frozen and taken away by Boba Fett, but the rest of the characters do manage to make a break for it by the end.

The whole movie is about a handful of people on the run from a huge organization. This is why it works so well and why it has lasted as such an iconic movie for so long. This is the quintessential underdog story. The group that has no move but to be on the run.

In the modern world we can see this happening from time to time. Smaller groups pull of a somewhat large military strike, and then immediately have to escape and evade, sometimes for years, as the people they just pissed off are coming after them. The stories that usually aren't told are the stories of the people who are on the run. There is great drama to be found in running away.

No one knows what is going to come after Star Wars Episode V The Empire Strikes Back the first time they see it. They might think that everything will work out alright, but there is no proof that it will. The ending of this movie leaves everyone hoping things will be good for these characters in the future, but there is no indication that will be the case save for that they have finally caught back up with the rest of the rebel fleet.

The other night, I was sitting at home, not expecting much to happen. I figured I'd watch some TV, eat some potato chips, have a few beers, and call it a night. Then a couple of buddies of mine unexpectedly showed up, telling me that I absolutely had to go with. I couldn't help but agree, due to their incredible enthusiasm.

We were speeding down this windy mountain road in my friends VW Beetle. I didn't think those things could go that fast. They kept playing these guitar based rock and roll songs on the radio. I guess we were warming up for something. What I had no idea.

We finally pulled up to this deserted looking mountain cabin, in the middle of nowhere. There were maybe a couple hundred cars parked outside. We finally found a place to park, and made our way inside. What I saw was surprising, to say the least.

The inside was much bigger than it appeared from the outside. There were these really funky purple curtains hanging from the ceiling, and these really weird psychedelic paintings all over the walls. I thought we had gone through some time warp back to the sixties. Even the people there were dressed like they came straight from a Grateful Dead concert.

What happened next was amazing. This band jumped out on stage, and the clear leader, this guy that was playing an acoustic guitar, jumped right into the first song, which was this really long ballad, that was just absolutely beautiful. I'd never heard anything like it in my entire life.

They started giving out CDs to everybody that was there. I guess they just got this extremely huge recording deal, and were really happy. I was happy to, as it was by far, the greatest concert I've ever seen.

Unearthing Peter Jackson's The Lovely Bones

With its fusion of real-life drama and stylized sequences, Peter Jackson's forthcoming The Lovely Bones recalls Heavenly Creatures, his innovative 1994 take on the notorious Parker-Hulme murder in 1950s New Zealand.

If the latter film's spectacular fantasy sequences, created by the then newly-created Weta Digital, helped persuade studio New Line to bankroll the three back-to-back Lord of the Rings films, then The Lovely Bones, which is based on the novel by Alice Sebold, might be custom-designed to prove he still has the nous to produce more left-field fare.

Alice Sebold's astonishingly successful 2002 debut novel opens in 1973, with 14-year-old Susie Salmon telling us she's been raped, murdered and dismembered. She watches from heaven as her family struggles to cope with her loss, and tentatively begins to probe for answers to the unsolved case.

The two respondents offer very different opinions of the film, with the first describing the CGI "heaven" from where Susie watches over her family with some degree of rapture, while the second reviewer bemoans the jolting shifts between the afterlife and everyday reality, where her father and mother are played by Mark Wahlberg and Rachel Weisz. The film is due in cinemas in December in the US and January in the UK.

It's hard to judge much at this stage, but are you looking forward to The Lovely Bones? Does Jackson have your confidence with such delicate source material? Or is the Kiwi film-maker, who has Tintin and two Hobbit films on his slate (as producer and co-writer respectively) best off sticking to the blockbuster material?

The first reviews are in for the movie adaptation of Alice Sebold's The Lovely Bones, which was a best-selling novel and a favorite of book clubs. The story describes the aftermath of a child's grisly murder, told from a heavenly point of view. The gruesome topic will likely keep The Lovely Bones from displacing a feel-good adaptation, The Blind Side, from the #1 box office spot. But Sebold's intriguing theme seems made for film.

Peter Jackson presents a totally new perspective on serial killing with this unusual and tragic tale of a bunch of young girls who linger between heaven and earth after suffering brutal deaths at the hands of a heartless psychopath. Unable to cut off their bonds from their families, the hapless souls sail through a purgatory-like world, waiting for deliverance. And while they wait, they try an communicate with their loved ones through strange mediums, hoping to hang on to earthly love, as long as they can.
