After 30 Years, The Adventure Of Tron Is Finally Continued By Tron Legacy

By Selene R. Singleton

Tron stunned moviegoers in 1982 when it was originally released, and many people have been patiently waiting for a sequel; their patience will soon pay off as Tron Legacy is about to hit theaters. There were many unfounded rumors floating around about a Tron sequel during the 90's. With time it was shown that the many rumors about a sequel were false. That was until the 2008 San Francisco Comic-Con when Disney officials at long last confirmed that the studio was seriously working on the second installment.

The central character of Tron Legacy is Sam Flynn whose father Kevin Flynn was the star character in Tron. Sam is trying to understand his father's disappearance when he inadvertently enters the virtual world where his father was trapped.

The first official report of the Tron Legacy project released to the press was that Brian Klugman and Lee Sternthal were hired by Disney to write the film back in January 2005. Concerned fans were relieved to see that Disney had not stopped work on Tron Legacy when they saw a trailer at the 2008 Comic-Con. Then, in 2009 at Comic Con, Disney announced the project's official title, Tron Legacy, to the audience. Film makers said the name correlates to the theme of a son looking for his father.

Tron Legacy features one of the fans' favorite elements of the first film, the Light Cycle; they have gotten a total makeover for this new movie. Daniel Simon has worked to design them, as well as a two seat vehicle called the Light Runner. Disney even made life size Light Cycles as part of its marketing scheme and showed them off at the Fan Expo in Toronto in 2009.

Shooting for Tron Legacy kicked off in April 2009 in Vancouver, British Columbia. Stage shots were done exclusively at the Canadian Motion Picture Park. All filming was done in 3D format, to the point that even the film's teasers have been prepared in 3D. A score for the movie including 24 different tracks was put together by Daft Punk. Tron Legacy will be shown on December 17, 2010 in the US and Canada.
