The Movie Holy Rollers Is Worth Seeing

By Barry Thornton

Holy Rollers is another look at the classic struggle to make one's own way in life. It was inspired by true events in the 1990s in New York, when orthodox Jews were acting as mules to smuggle the drug ecstasy into the US from Europe. However, the story line and characters are fictional. Introduced at the Sundance Film Festival early this year, it is now in the movie theaters and will come out on DVD in October 2010.

The main character is Sam Gold, a young Hasidic Jew who has been raised in Brooklyn in the orthodox tradition. Although his father is in business, Sam is destined to become a rabbi and make his fortune by marrying the daughter of a wealthy family in a match arranged by his father.

As Sam gets older and nearer to his fate, he begins to chafe at the restraints imposed on him by his family's expectations. Sam has a talent for business and sees ways that the family fortunes could improve, but his father refuses to allow him to take an active part in commerce, urging him to devote himself to the study of the Torah. Sam, however, is beginning to realize that he may not be rabbi material, and is unsettled enough to recruited by the older brother of a friend to make money by bringing 'medicine' into the US from Europe.

With his equally innocent friend, Sam unwittingly becomes a mule, for the medicine is actually the illegal street drug ecstasy. Once he realizes what is going on, he faces the choice of returning to his restricted and impoverished life of religious study or go willingly into the world of criminal drug dealers.

Sam begins to form new relationships with the drug underworld as he lives a double life. His business instincts prove valuable and are applauded by his Israeli dealer, and he is attracted by the man's troubled girl friend. Eventually Sam himself is recruiting the innocent and experimenting with the drug he smuggles.

As things begin to unravel for Sam in both his lives, he learns that there is a middle ground between religiosity and depravity where God may be found. He ends up on the run, struggling with a decision that will hurt many of the people he has tried to love.

Sam, struggling to find God on the middle ground between the temptations of the world and the straitjacket of his old life, is soon on the run, trying to decide which way to go in the future. No matter how he acts, he will hurt others in his life if he wants to save his own.

The title uses a term, once coined to be derisive, for pentecostal Christians who became 'carried away' or ecstatic during worship. The addicts in the movie are seeking a similar euphoria by means of an illegal street drug. The desire to change current reality of something better is true of both radically different processes.

Holy Rollers, the movie, has had mixed reviews, but more people like it than don't.
